Summary
Abstract. Given a vector of finitely many piles of finitely many tokens. In End-Wythoff, two players alternate in taking a positive number of tokens from either end-pile, or taking the same positive number of tokens from both ends. The player first unable to move loses and the opponent wins. We characterize the P-positions (ai, K, bi / of the game for any vector K of middle piles, where ai, bi denote the sizes of the end-piles. A more succinct characterization can be made in the special case where K is a vector such that, for some n ∈ ℤ≤0, (K, n) and (n, K) are both P-positions. For this case the (noisy) initial behavior of the P-positions is described precisely. Beyond the initial behavior, we have bi − ai = i, as in the normal 2-pile Wythoff game.
Introduction
A position in the (impartial) game End-Nim is a vector of finitely many piles of finitely many tokens. Two players alternate in taking a positive number of tokens from either end-pile (“burning-the-candle-at-both-ends”). The player first unable to move loses and the opponent wins. Albert and Nowakowski gave a winning strategy for End-Nim, by describing the P-positions of the game. (Their paper also includes a winning strategy for the partizan version of End-Nim.)
Effect of oxygen and growth medium on in vitro biofilm formation by Escherichia coli

The effects of oxygen availability on in vitro biofilm formation by an Escherichia coli K-12 strain and 13 clinical E. coli strains were compared. All E. coli strains were capable of forming monospecies biofilm on polystyrene in aerobic media. The K-12 strain produced biofilm in both aerobic glucose minimal medium (ABTG), and aerobic trypticase soy broth (TSB) whereas the majority of the clinical strains produced significant biofilm only in aerobic TSB (9 of 13). In anaerobic media, E. coli K-12 and 9 of the 13 clinical strains were capable of forming biofilm in vitro. Only three clinical strains formed biofilm in anaerobic TSB whereas six clinical strains produced detectable biofilm in anaerobic ABTG. None of the strains tested were capable of forming biofilm in both anaerobic ABTG and anaerobic TSB. Strains that were good biofilm formers in aerobic ABTG also produced the highest amount of biofilm in anaerobic ABTG (R2 = 0.90). Image analysis revealed notable differences in architecture for biofilms grown in the presence and in the absence of oxygen. In aerobic ABTG, the biofilm was dominated by tall, mushroom-shaped microcolonies with pores and channels whereas biofilm in anaerobic ABTG was thinner and less heterogeneous, resulting in reduced maximum thickness and biovolume. Analysis of phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) profiles from E. coli K-12 and three clinical strains did not reveal a specific pattern associated with the biofilm phenotypes. Interestingly, the clinical E. coli strains adjusted their PLFA composition much more than did E. coli K-12 in response to changes in growth regimens. Collectively, the results indicate that oxygen availability may affect E. coli biofilm formation in minimal and complex media. The results confirm that E. coli K-12 and some clinical E. coli strains are capable of forming in vitro biofilm under anaerobic conditions. However, the data also suggest that this attribute is highly strain dependent and may vary significantly among clinical isolates.
Structure and Electrochemical Behavior of Plasma-Sprayed LSGM Electrolyte Films

An intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) electrolyte film of La0.8Sr 0.2Ga0.8Mg0.2O2.8 (LSGM) was fabricated using a plasma spray process. The microstructure and phase were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The electrochemical behavior of the thermal sprayed LSGM film was investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The study indicates that thermal spray can deposit a dense LSGM layer. It was found that the rapid cooling in the thermal process led to an amorphous or poor crystalline LSGM deposited layer. This amorphous structure has a significant effect on the performance of the cell. Crystallization of the deposited LSGM layer was observed during annealing between 500–600 °C. After annealing at 800 °C, the ionic conductivity of the sprayed LSGM layer can reach the same level as that of the sintered LSGM.
Comparison of Three Methods to Recover Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci (VRE) From Perianal and Environmental Samples Collected During A Hospital Outbreak of VRE

Objective:
To establish an efficient and sensitive technique for recovering vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) from perianal and environmental samples collected during implementation of control measures for an outbreak of VRE.
Design:Perianal and environmental samples were collected in triplicate on sterile swabs. One swab was used to inoculate a selective broth medium containing 6 μg of vancomycin and 8 μg of ciprofloxacin per mL, one to inoculate Campylobacter agar containing 10 μg/mL of vancomycin, and one to inoculate Enterococcosel agar containing 8 μg/mL of vancomycin.
Setting:Samples were collected in the intensive care units of a 600-bed university hospital over a period of 2 months.
Sample Selection:Patients and their immediate environment were sampled if they resided in a ward with a patient known to be colonized or infected with VRE.
Results:Of the 88 perianal samples obtained from 63 patients, 37 were positive for VRE by broth culture, with 36 also recovered on both types of solid media (sensitivity, 97.3%; negative predictive value, 98.1%). Of the initial samples collected from each of the 63 patients, 20 were positive for VRE by all methods. Of the 500 environmental samples cultured, 139 were positive for VRE in broth, with only 33 recovered on Campylobacter agar (sensitivity, 23.7%; negative predictive value, 77.2%) and 22 on Enterococcosel agar (sensitivity, 15.8%; negative predictive value, 75.2%).
Conclusions:Our data indicate that, when performing surveillance cultures during an outbreak of VRE, use of an enrichment broth medium is required to recover VRE contaminating environmental surfaces; however, direct inoculation to selective solid medium is adequate to recover VRE in patient perianal specimens.

It is proved that for a symmetric convex body K in ℝn, if for some τ >0, |K ⋂ (x + τK) depends on ‖x‖K only, then K is an ellipsoid. As a part of the proof, smoothness properties of convolution bodies are studied.
